CNB Sponsors Colgate Country Showdown
The Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce and the Mountain State Street Machines will kick off this year’s traditional three-day Independence Day celebration on Friday, July 4 and will conclude Sunday, July 6. Members of both organizations have dedicated nearly six months in the planning and execution of this popular community event.
Hot rods, muscle cars, trucks and pick-ups, vintage cars, low riders and others will arrive from the tri-state area to Railroad Avenue and Third Street late Friday afternoon. The largest Cruise-In event in West Virginia will kick-off the weekend with 400 classic cars expected to be on show in downtown Elkins on July 4th. Live entertainment will be provided from 6:00 – 9:00 PM for spectators and car show participants near the train depot.
The Elkins and Beverly Fire Departments will be grilling up chicken and pork BBQ meals behind Elkins City Hall – dinners will be available for purchase beginning at 5:00 PM. Onlookers can enjoy the ambiance of the City of Elkins on a summer evening with dinner and a “show.”
Saturday, July 4 the Mountain State Street Machine Car Show will open in the Elkins City Park as hundreds of antique classic cars and hot rods roll in for the biggest car show in the state. The car show will be open at 9:00 AM Saturday and Sunday. Foto I will be providing custom photos for car show entrants.
In conjunction with the car show, the Chamber of Commerce with assistance from the Mountain Chapter Brothers of the Wheel will host the 3rd Annual Patriot Poker Run The winning hand will be awarded $1000.00 in cash thanks to event sponsors: Mike Mullens Law Office, Kathy’s Decorating & Design, and Beander’s. Prizes will also be issued for the best hand of Aces, Kings, Queens and Jacks.
Bikers may choose to take an 80-mile scenic ride through Randolph and Tucker Counties or an antique run with a shorter jaunt. Registration is from 9:30 – noon at the tennis courts in the Elkins City Park. The entry fee is $10 per hand; a second hand may be purchased for $5. Registration forms and additional information are available at the Chamber office.
A bike show will be held in front of the D&E gym with a trophy being awarded for a People’s Choice award. The $12 entry fee includes a participation plaque and entry into drawings for hundreds of dollars in prizes.
The Elkins Lion Club’s famous chicken BBQ dinners will be on sale beginning at 11:00 AM in the park, both Saturday and Sunday. Early car show arrivers may purchase breakfast at Beander’s booth on vendor’s row.
From 5:00 – 6:00 at D&E’s outdoor amphitheater, the Chamber of Commerce will host a military hour with the posting of our nation’s colors by the National Guard. The Star Spangled Banner will be performed by a three-member cast from the American Mountain Theater. A C-130 Hercules flyover, courtesy of the 130th Airlift Wing of Charleston, will take place on the last chord of the Star Spangled Banner, orchestrated to take place at precisely 5:15 PM. Military equipment and information will be on display courtesy of the National Guard’s 201st Field Artillery Battery. The featured speaker will be G. T. “Buck” Smith, Davis & Elkins College’s new president.
The Chamber of Commerce will be selling concessions, Zuhl’s frozen lemonades and patriotic novelties near the outdoor amphitheater from 4:00 – 9:00 PM. The Elkins Shop ‘n Save Express will also open an ice cream and root beer float concession trailer with proceeds to benefit the Chamber’s education scholarship program.
During the 6:00 hour, “The Smokin’ Section Band" will take center stage before the finals of the Colgate Country Showdown. They will also provide the back-up music for twelve contestants who will vie for a $1000 cash prize being provided by Citizens National Bank of Elkins beginning at 7:00 PM. The Showdown is sponsored by WDNE Radio, Citizens National Bank and Shop ‘n Save Express.
A fireworks display, courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Elkins, will light up the sky over D&E’s campus following the announcement of the Showdown finalists, with an estimated time of 9:30 PM.
“All the entertainment and shows are free the entire weekend,” commented ERCCC president Kathy Leombruno. “A debt of gratitude is owed to countless corporate and individual sponsors, and the City of Elkins, who make the events possible along with the Chamber staff, its members and volunteers, and the MSSM Car Club. The volunteers work tirelessly for months to host an incredible July 4th weekend for our community and thankfully they keep returning year-after-year to ensure its continued success. Bring the lawn chairs, family and friends and enjoy it all!”
Additional information about the July 4 festivities may be obtained by calling the Chamber of Commerce office at 636-2717 or e-mailing chamber@elkinsrandolphcountywv.com.
